Let’s Talk Climate Action Symposium: Inspiring Change for the Future

From April 2nd to April 15th, the UBC Centre for Community Engaged Learning’s Let’s Talk Science and McMaster Let’s Talk Science programs co-hosted the Let’s Talk Climate Action symposium for high school students. This hybrid event included a virtual talk and panel discussion, an online workshop, and on-campus activities aimed at fostering critical thinking and innovation in climate action. The goal was to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals to take meaningful steps toward a sustainable future.

Event Highlights

Virtual Talk and Panel Discussion (April 2, 2024)

The symposium kicked off with a virtual session on climate action leadership, with 170 students from 6-7 classes participating live.

In-Person Event: Building Sustainable Structures (April 9, 2024)

In-person events took place at UBC and McMaster, with a total of 195 students from three schools in attendance. Students designed and presented sustainable building plans.

Virtual Workshop: Filmmaking for Climate Summit (April 15, 2024)

90 students and 3 teachers joined the virtual session, where they learned about filmmaking and its role in climate activism.

Recordings of virtual events were made available to registered high schools that couldn’t attend live.

Students toured around 3 buildings on campus, where coordinators and volunteers showed them the sustainable features of these buildings.
